Historical Museum of the Palatinate - KUR Project

Only in exceptional cases have imperial and royal garments still remained preserved.  And even more rarely can they be attributed to a particular medieval ruler.  Thus, the textile finds in the graves of the emperors and kings in the Speyer Cathedral were all the more significant.  In 1900 an excavation commission of scientists and experts examined 18 graves in 18 days.  They opened the sarcophagi and retrieved a large portion of the grave goods and a large number of fragments of precious grave textiles.  The Federal Cultural Foundation is now supporting the scientific conservation of the grave finds of the Palatinate in Speyer.  The results of the scientific examination will be presented publicly worldwide for the first time in the exhibition “The Salians.  Power in Transition” starting from April 10, 2011.
